I presented the early drawings and video from my residency at lower hewood farm – an organic small-holding where I was spending time with a litter of piglets from birth to table. At the time of presenting, I had been on the farm for just 3 months, so the work was brand new and just starting to find a rhythm.

I saw the work that I was so embedded in at the time through the eyes of others, and this is always useful – your own perspective can be so limiting, so the views and insights of others can help to open up your thoughts. I gained confidence in the work as people commented on how apparent the relationship was between me, as the drawer/videographer, and the pigs.

The process itself can be challenging, and as I was one of the first artists to share work, the group were not yet used to the steps. However, it still proved a useful framework to interrogate what work was there, without too much tangential input. I like how the Critical Response Process keeps things focused.

The experience of receiving feedback is a bit like releasing the valve of a pressure cooker when you talk and listen to other artists about your work. All the stuff that has built up in you has a way out and then there is space to have new ideas around the work

I have brought a body of work that was purposively varied selection of medium and styles to gain feedback and gain new insight to further my practice in general. For me it was relevant to do so because I had then had a break producing work and needed to review my trajectory and regain momentum.

The works consisted of drawings, painting and performance they were all intertwined with philosophical existentialist concept. However, the most discussed work was the performance in which I sang dressed in a wire costume that was a part of performance/ installation titled “Transdigital human singing with his niece from Brazil in the hypernopolis of the cyber space”.  I then sang “A change is gonna come” by Otis Redis that the lyrics says clearly about one’s story from birth and the certainty of the future.

It was clear to me that my choice of appropriating known songs that the lyrics may allude to my concept at first got a bit confused by people that followed my practice and quite did not get fully how it worked. This I believe was because the work experienced through social media did not always show the entire installation as it was set to be. Overall, it reassured me that the work was enjoyable, and I needed to simplify it so the overall concept was clearer.

Overall, I though the feedback was valid and very important for me to see gaps in my practice. I was also opened to personal opinions in which I wanted the viewers people to express their feeling and first impressions as I believe that is very important for the success of the piece. The main purpose of this work is to generate awareness of digital existence and the changing human condition and longing for living longer.
